The Resurgence of YNG!

August 10, 2012 Michael Metzinger Michael Metzinger

On Thursday, we sent out a press release for our July 2012 passenger numbers to media outlets across Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. In case you missed it, here is the official release. As the document notes, July was our best month at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in twenty years! A total of 10,869 passengers flew aboard Allegiant Air to Orlando, Tampa, and Myrtle Beach last month. Furthermore, we saw an increase in casino charter traffic with multiple “junkets” flying nonstop to Atlantic City and Tunica.

July was also a record-setting month for Allegiant Air at YNG as they transported just shy of 10,000 passengers throughout the course of the month. Our partnership with Allegiant has grown stronger since they embarked on their initial service to Orlando in May 2006. They have expanded their offerings at YNG to include Tampa and Myrtle Beach as well. With your continued support, we are hopeful for an additional destination in the offing.

Past Twenty Years

Over the past twenty years, many major events have taken place on a local and national level. Here are just a handful of events since 1992 to name a few:

  • The United States has elected three Presidents (Clinton, Bush, and Obama),
  • Youngstown State has won three NCAA Division 1-AA National Championships (1993, 1994, and 1997),
  • The 711 connector was built from I-680 to I-80 and SR 11,
  • Eastwood Field was built at the Eastwood Mall Complex and has been home to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers since 1998, and
  • The Covelli Centre was built in Downtown Youngstown and has hosted Elton John, John Mellencamp, and hundreds of other acts since it opened in 2005.

The resurgence of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport has coincided with the “comeback” of the Mahoning Valley economy. Within the past year, George Zeller, a Cleveland based economist said, the Youngstown-Warren economy was the fastest growing in the state. This, coupled with the Utica Shale Boom sweeping the region, has brought plenty of excitement to people in our community. I think it is safe to say that there are exciting times ahead in the Mahoning Valley!

We want to thank you for your continued support of our Airport. We have proven with Allegiant Air over the past six years that our community and our region will support airline service at this Airport. Airlines are beginning to become aware of our success and hopefully that translates into additional air service options into the future. Until then, your support of Allegiant  Air and of our casino charters is critical to our anticipated growth and our impact on the community in the years to come.

From all of us at YNG… Thank You!

Passenger Growth Translates into Terminal Improvements at YNG

June 28, 2012 Michael Metzinger Michael Metzinger

Over the course of the past six years, the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport (YNG) went from being an airport with no scheduled commercial airline service to an airport that is projected to transport some 75,000 passengers this year. As passenger traffic has increased at YNG, the need to improve our terminal facility has become essential. As you will agree, it is important to provide a clean, passenger friendly facility for all of our passengers that travel from as faraway as Cleveland, Erie, and Pittsburgh to enjoy the convenience of Allegiant Air at YNG.

In November 2011, the Western Reserve Port Authority approved a bond sale that raised approximately $3.7 million in order for the airport to make improvements in and around our terminal. (more…)
